Here’s a story for you. It’s about change and how we become stuck in our ways, maybe to our detriment.
Way back in the 1980s, Crescent Chapter #10 partnered with the Daughters of the Empire on Canada Day to give away cake, coffee, and cookies. Eventually, Eastern Star took it all over. Our purpose in the community has changed over the years. The location changed over the years but we were always in the park. Sometimes we made as many as 50 or 60 dozen cupcakes to hand out on Canada Day.
This year, for the first time, there was no birthday cake, there was no cupcakes and we were invited to just have a community booth and talk about our organization… You know what? It was better than cupcakes!!!
We talked to past honour Queens, Masons and any number of people who were familiar with Eastern Star and those who weren’t. We talked about Autism Support Dogs, and Cancer Projects. We talked about Scholarships, Stamps, Pop Tabs, and more. It was a very positive thing and it was the City of Nanaimo that pulled us into doing this. What a very cool event!. Thank you. I hope we have many years to come.
